JEE MAIN 2026 · Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds

JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Question Paper: 8 Apr, Shift 2 (B.E./B.Tech), question 62

Updated
Single correct+4 / -1Answer matches NTA’s final key

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: Vapours of the liquid with higher boiling point condense before vapours of the liquid with lower boiling points in fractional distillation.

Statement II: The vapours rising up in the fractionating column become richer in high boiling component of the mixture.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Choose one

Solution

Solution

In the fractionating column the vapour repeatedly condenses and re-evaporates on the packing.

  • Statement I, true. The higher-boiling component condenses first, lower in the column, and runs back down.
  • Statement II, false. Because the high-boiling component keeps condensing out, the rising vapour becomes richer in the lower-boiling component.

Answer: Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
