If 26(233(122)+255(124)+277(126)+⋯+21313(1212))=313−α26\left(\frac{2^3}{3}\binom{12}{2} + \frac{2^5}{5}\binom{12}{4} + \frac{2^7}{7}\binom{12}{6} + \dots + \frac{2^{13}}{13}\binom{12}{12}\right) = 3^{13} - \alpha, then α\alpha is equal to:

Solution

Solution

Turn each term into one coefficient. Using 1k+1(12k)=113(13k+1)\frac{1}{k+1}\binom{12}{k} = \frac{1}{13}\binom{13}{k+1}, the general term is 2k+113(13k+1)\frac{2^{k+1}}{13}\binom{13}{k+1} for k=2,4,…,12k = 2, 4, \dots, 12. So

26×(… )=2∑j∈{3,5,…,13}(13j)2j.26 \times (\dots) = 2\sum_{j \in \{3, 5, \dots, 13\}} \binom{13}{j} 2^{j}.

Odd-index sum. ∑j odd(13j)2j=(1+2)13−(1−2)132=313+12\sum_{j \text{ odd}} \binom{13}{j}2^j = \frac{(1 + 2)^{13} - (1 - 2)^{13}}{2} = \frac{3^{13} + 1}{2}. Remove the j=1j = 1 term, (131)⋅2=26\binom{13}{1} \cdot 2 = 26:

2(313+12−26)=313+1−52=313−51.2\left(\frac{3^{13} + 1}{2} - 26\right) = 3^{13} + 1 - 52 = 3^{13} - 51.

Answer: α=51\alpha = 51.
