Single correct+4 / -1Answer matches NTA’s final key

Let OO be the vertex of the parabola y2=4xy^2 = 4x and its chords OPOP and OQOQ are perpendicular to each other. If the locus of the mid-point of the line segment PQPQ is a conic CC, then the length of its latus rectum is:

Solution

Solution

Take P(t12,2t1)P(t_1^2, 2t_1) and Q(t22,2t2)Q(t_2^2, 2t_2). Slope of OPOP is 2t1\frac{2}{t_1}, of OQOQ is 2t2\frac{2}{t_2}; perpendicular means 4t1t2=−1\frac{4}{t_1 t_2} = -1, so t1t2=−4t_1t_2 = -4.

Midpoint (h,k)(h, k): h=t12+t222h = \frac{t_1^2 + t_2^2}{2}, k=t1+t2k = t_1 + t_2. Then

k2=t12+t22+2t1t2=2h−8.k^2 = t_1^2 + t_2^2 + 2t_1t_2 = 2h - 8.

The locus is y2=2(x−4)y^2 = 2(x - 4), a parabola with 4a=24a = 2.

Answer: latus rectum =2= 2.
