Single correct+4 / -1Answer matches NTA’s final key

Let α=3+4+8+9+13+14+…\alpha = 3 + 4 + 8 + 9 + 13 + 14 + \dots up to 40 terms. If (tan⁡β)α1020(\tan\beta)^{\frac{\alpha}{1020}} is a root of the equation x2+x−2=0x^2 + x - 2 = 0, β∈(0,π2)\beta \in \left(0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right), then sin⁡2β+3cos⁡2β\sin^2\beta + 3\cos^2\beta is equal to:

Solution

Solution

Sum the series in pairs. (3+4)+(8+9)+(13+14)+…(3 + 4) + (8 + 9) + (13 + 14) + \dots is 20 pair-sums 7,17,27,…7, 17, 27, \dots, an AP with difference 10:

α=202(2⋅7+19⋅10)=10⋅204=2040,α1020=2.\alpha = \frac{20}{2}\big(2 \cdot 7 + 19 \cdot 10\big) = 10 \cdot 204 = 2040, \qquad \frac{\alpha}{1020} = 2.

Use the root. x2+x−2=(x+2)(x−1)x^2 + x - 2 = (x + 2)(x - 1), so the roots are 11 and −2-2. Since tan⁡2β≥0\tan^2\beta \ge 0, tan⁡2β=1\tan^2\beta = 1, and with β\beta acute, β=π4\beta = \frac{\pi}{4}.

sin⁡2β+3cos⁡2β=12+32=2.\sin^2\beta + 3\cos^2\beta = \tfrac12 + \tfrac32 = 2.
