Updated
Single correct+4 / -1Answer matches NTA’s final key

Match List - I with List - II.

List - I (Electronic configuration of neutral atom, where n = 2) List - II (1st Ionization Energy, kJ mol⁻¹)
A. ns² I. 2080
B. ns²np¹ II. 899
C. ns²np³ III. 800
D. ns²np⁶ IV. 1402

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Solution

Solution

With n=2n = 2 the atoms are Be (2s²), B (2s²2p¹), N (2s²2p³) and Ne (2s²2p⁶).

  • Ne has a closed shell: the highest value, 2080 (I).
  • N has a stable half-filled 2p subshell: 1402 (IV).
  • Be loses an electron from a filled 2s subshell: 899 (II).
  • B loses a single 2p electron, which is shielded by 2s and easier to remove than Be's: 800 (III). This is the familiar Be > B dip.

Answer: A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-I.
